With a new chapter in Syria, UOSSM launched the PIONEER Initiative (Primary Initial Observation & Needs Evaluation for Essential Response) – a strategic, multi-phase intervention in partnership with the Syrian Ministry of Health (MOH) and aligned with WHO standards-aimed at rebuilding Syria’s collapsing primary healthcare system.
An assessment throughout five governorates in Syria identified key service gaps and provided essential data to guide targeted, evidence-based interventions to improve healthcare accessibility and quality.
In response, UOSSM rehabilitated two primary healthcare centers in the Damascus suburbs (Harran Alawemeed, Ghouta), and in Hama to provide quality, health services to families. Click here to learn more.
Our Gharb Al Mashtal Primary Healthcare Center (PHC) in Hama was the first primary healthcare center to be rehabilitated and re-opened. The PHC is a lifeline for the most vulnerable, that aims at enhancing health and wellbeing, promote resilience, and improve access to quality primary healthcare services.
Every month our dedicated teams provide thousands of patients with the following services:
This center is supported by the generous community in Houston, Texas.
The people of Ghouta in the suburbs of Damascus endured so much suffering. Years of besiegement, bombardment, chemical attacks, displacement, and overwhelming loss left the people broken and the area in ruins. It is estimated that there are around 80,000 people in the region in need of all basic services, especially healthcare services.
Access to healthcare is extremely difficult due to transportation constraints along with distance to the nearest healthcare center (30 minutes to Damascus). Area residents now have access to a wide array of services within a short distance.
The 3-story renovated and rehabilitate building provides a complete package of integrated healthcare services, free-of-charge to families in the area.
Rooted in the belief that health is a right for all, this PHC stands as a model of integrated, free, and sustainable care, delivered by a dedicated team of doctors and specialists. Every monthly thousands of people receive services including:
“This achievement (opening of the center) is one of many in the healthcare field (in Syria) to provide a variety of the best quality services to our people in Ghouta, which they truly deserve.”— Dr. Musab Al-Ali, Minister of Health
“This center is more than a building — it’s a promise of dignity, care, and a healthier future for thousands of families.”
Years of war and the devastating earthquake in 2023, resulted in creating over 1.2 million orphans in northwest Syria.

The program aims to alleviate the suffering of the orphans and their caregivers by:
Additionally, we provide monthly cash assistance and organize psychosocial support activities for both the orphans and their caregivers. Click here to learn more.
