UOSSM Hosts Landmark Primary Healthcare Summit in Damascus: A Vision for Syria’s Health Future

From April 4-6, UOSSM held its first “UOSSM Primary Healthcare Summit in Syria” in Damascus, Syria — a landmark event dedicated to shaping a resilient, people-centered healthcare system for the country’s future.

In partnership with the Syrian Ministry of Health, and the University of Damascus, this summit brought together medical professionals, officials, and academics from Syria and abroad to shape the future of healthcare in Syria. The event featured powerful discussions, expert panels, and strategy sessions focused on rebuilding Syria’s primary healthcare infrastructure after more than 13 years of crisis. A total of around 450 people attended the conference over the course of the three days.
The summit was attended by:
  • Dr. Musab Nazzal Al-Ali – Minister of Health
  • Dr. Hussein Al-Khatib – Deputy Minister
  • Dr. Zuheir Qarrat – Director of Planning and International Cooperation
  • Dr. Monzer Yazji – UOSSM International Board Member and President of UOSSM USA
  • Dr. Khaula Sawah – Vice President of UOSSM USA
  • Administration of the University of Damascus
  • Distinguished group of academics and physicians from inside and outside Syria.

For over 10 years, UOSSM has maintained a close partnership with Syria’s Health Directorate in Idlib, working to deliver critical healthcare services in northwest Syria, and is now partnering with the new Ministry of Health to support provision of quality healthcare in all of Syria.

With sessions focusing on primary care models, medical training, mental health integration, and community-based solutions, the summit concluded with a renewed call to action: to build a more sustainable, accessible, and responsive healthcare system for Syria, and reaffirmed UOSSM’s commitment to primary healthcare as the cornerstone of Syria’s health system, enabling access, dignity, and continuity of care for all Syrians.

Dr. Monzer Yazji, President of UOSSM USA said, “Syria is broken and bleeding, together, we will rebuild and heal Syria.”

UOSSM extends deep gratitude to all attendees, speakers, and partners who helped bring this vision to life.
