Happy New Year! We hope this newsletter finds you in the best of health. We would like to welcome all of our new subscribers and supporters to the UOSSM family. You will receive plenty of new information and updates about our work and activities for this and every month. UOSSM’s 2000+ dedicated staff members in the US and abroad are working hard to make a difference in the lives of Syrians inside Syria and in neighboring countries, and to provide the medical support that is so desperately needed. Torrential Rain Wreaks Havoc on #Forgotten Families (IDPs) in Northern Syria

Torrential rainfall wreaked havoc on the internally displaced in Idlib. On December 26, unusually heavy rainfall caused severe flash flooding in Northern Syria along the Turkish Border and in Northern Aleppo. Hundreds of tents were washed away in Atma, Dana, Sarmada and Qah in the Northern countryside of Idlib. The area is largely desert and valleys with poor drainage. The tents are canvas and fixed to the bare ground with dirt roads connecting them. Food, supplies and personal belongings were also destroyed. UOSSM Celebrates International Day of Persons With Disabilities With Special Needs Children

On December 3, UOSSM Protection Teams celebrated International Day of Persons With Disabilities, by providing several fun group activities with special needs children.

UOSSM Participates in #16DaystoEndViolence Campaign

UOSSM participated in the #16DaystoEndViolence Campaign to help raise awareness and help bring an end to gender-based violence. UOSSM participated by providing awareness campaigns in UOSSM centers and on social media. The campaign was launched on November 25 and lasted for 16 days.

UOSSM Works With Members of the Rohingya and Uyghur Community to Advocate for Human Rights In Toronto

On Human Rights Day (December 8), UOSSM Canada members met with leaders from the Rohingya and Uyghur communities in Toronto to advocate for human rights. The attendees discussed current challenges with the Rohingya in Bangladesh, including advocating against forced repatriation, the current situation in China including re-education camps”and the next steps that need to be taken for advocacy.

German Actress Laura Maack Visits UOSSM Centers Supporting the Smile Child Campaign 

On December 11, German actress Laura Maack visited the UOSSM Mental Health Care, and Physical Therapy Centers in Gaziantep as part of the #SmileChild campaign. The children in the centers shared painful stories and struggles of their lives with her. She also joined the children for fun activities. The main goal of the #SmileChild Campaign is to raise awareness about the suffering of children in wars.

Since 2012, UOSSM has been providing emergency medical relief and healthcare services to the Syrian people affected by the crisis, working primarily inside Syria and with Syrian refugees in Turkey.

UOSSM:

  • In 2017, UOSSM supported 18 primary health care centers and 13 mobile clinics
  • UOSSM Bab Al Hawa Hospital provided health care services to 250,000 patients in 2017
  • In 2017, 175,000 beneficiaries were provided with nutrition services focused on women and children
  • UOSSM Mental Health and Psychosocial Support provided care to 22,955 beneficiaries in 2017
  • UOSSM Protection services were provided to 75,564 in 2017
