Your Gift at Work: Mustafa Takes His First Steps- On the Road to Recovery

Mustafa was in a horrific car accident. He almost succumbed to his injuries, but fell into a coma. For three months, Mustafa’s family never left his side, fearful that he would never wake up. When he finally came out of his coma, Mustafa was left with serious medical problems. He was bedridden, unable to stand or walk on his own. Devastated, his parents searched for help for their son until they found the physiotherapy center at UOSSM’s Bab Al-Hawa Rehabilitation Center. There they found a caring physical therapist who worked with Mustafa until he finally took his first steps…on his own!

Thanks to your support, Mustafa and others like him can find the hope they are looking for to live a healthy life – full of possibilities!

UOSSM USA Partners with Hathi Hayati to Support New Village in NW Syria

UOSSM USA is partnering with Hathi Hayati to support the process of establishment of a new village, Al Hayat Village, in northwest Syria.

Al Hayath Village will become the new home for 200 Syrian displaced families ( originating from Ghouta, Homs, Daraa, Idlib, Aleppo, and other areas). The community will also include widows with children, special needs cases, and amputees. In addition, skills-based professionals (such as educators, docctors, nurses, and others) will mover there to ensure that the community thrives! The village will also have a mosque, school for all grade levels, medical point, solar powered electricity, and a clean water tank.

The first phase is complete with 200 new homes (for up to 1000 people) built, as well as the school’s first floor for elementary students, and the medical point which is fully operational. Plans are underway to expand the medical point and the school’s second and third floors for the middle and high schools, respectively. In addition, the electricity (via solar power) and water supplies will be established and delivered to all homes in the near future.

Providing Access to Mental Health Services in Northwest Syria

UOSSM is now operating two mental health mobile clinics, supported by WHO, in northwest Syria. The mobile clinics provide internally displaced families in displacement camps (i.e. Afreen) with access to mental health care and psychosocial support services, as well as referrals of severe cases to the UOSSM Mental Health Hospital in Sarmada.

UOSSM Hosts an Event to Launch its Health Strengthening Research Project

On August 24th, UOSSM hosted an event in Gaziantep, Turkey to launch the R4HSSS Project: “Health System Strengthening in North West Syria”. The event was attended by partners, donors, humanitarian organizations, and representatives of the Idlib Health Directorate and the Turkish health Institutions.

Working in partnership with King’s College London, the 4-year RH4SSS project is one of the main research projects in Idlib. Its activities will be targeted toward humanitarian work and development in northern Syria that aim to close gaps in access, establish best practices, and find long-term solutions for problems that plague the local health system. The project work streams focus on health governance, health information system, provision of health services, and medical education and professional training.
