"The righteous are those who feed the poor, the orphan and the captive for the love of God, saying: 'We feed you for the sake of God Alone; we seek from you neither reward nor thanks.'" - The Holy Quran, 76:8-9. The Prophet (PBUH) said; “Whoever feeds a fasting person to break their fast will equally reap, without diminishing, the rewards of the fasting person.”

As the Syrian crisis marked its 10th year a few weeks ago, millions continue to suffer. Hundreds of thousands were killed or wounded, and millions were displaced, both to other countries, and internally. Syrian families, living in displacement camps are in dire situations. Food prices are soaring due to inflation. Malnutrition is on the rise, especially among the most vulnerable, including children and women. Please help us this Ramadan, fight hunger, improve the health and well-being, and ease the suffering of those families. Innocent lives are depending on us.

Nour's family is from Latakia, Syria. They are displaced and live in a displacement camp in northwest Syria. After noticing that Nour had no appetite, her mother took her to the nearby pediatric clinic UOSSM’s Kharbat Al Joz Primary Health Care Center. After examination, the 24-month-old was referred to the nutrition clinic. She was diagnosed with moderate acute malnutrition.

Nour was entered into the Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) program. The team members stressed to the family the importance of continuing with this program, following up with the nutrition technician, and following the nutritional advice to help Nour reach a healthy weight. After only 1 1/2 months, Nour recovered from moderate acute malnutrition and reached a healthy weight.

While at least one out of eight children in Syria are chronically malnourished, this ratio is worse in areas of displacement. For example, Aleppo has 1 out of 4 malnourished children and Idlib has 1 out of 5 malnourished children.

According to a Save the Children report in 2020, one in eight children are stunted, and one out of every three pregnant women are suffering from anemia and other micronutrient deficiencies, and at least 51,000 are acutely malnourished. Those numbers continue to rise.

Young children and pregnant women are among the most vulnerable to malnutrition. Last year, UOSSM USA took the initiative to support the nutrition program in Syria and distribute nutritious food baskets to thousands of families in need. The goal was to help alleviate their hunger, strengthen their immunity, improve their well-being, and help them ward off COVID-19.

We would like to continue with this initiative and other initiatives to be able to support those in need this Ramadan.

Nour received nutrition services at a UOSSM nutrition clinic for malnutrition.
